Along with learning about citizenship and how to properly fold the American flag, National Elementary Honor Society students will package 300 flags to send to active miltary personnel. Included in each package is a card which says: "A flag for your pocket so you can always carry a little piece of home. We are praying for you and we are proud of you. Thank you for defending our country and our freedom."Students and faculty got into the holiday spirit at our annual school Sing-a-long. Our fourth grade team sends out best wishes for a holiday break full of fun and family! See ya next year!! Which cookie will absorb the most milk? 4th graders want to know. Today we found the mass of Nilla Wafers, Oreos, and ChipsAhoy cookies before and after they were dunked in milk. Students calculated the difference in mass to determine which cookie absorbed the most. No worries Santa, we got you all hooked up!
This week our students participated in the National Hour of Code. Using Blockly to write JavaScript, students programmed characters through challenges on code.org. Between the two classes we wrote approximately 5,000 lines of code during this activity. The icing on the cake, was visiting with Mr. Michael Hedgpeth, a software architect. He talked with 4th graders in the Learning Commons about ways they could incorporate coding into their play with Lego Mindstorms and even by learning algorithms for the Rubik's cube. Samuel was sure proud of his Dad!
What a great experience our 4th grade students had at Camp Thurman. The facility and staff where both top notch. Students and chaperones were able to participate in activities that developed self confidence, cooperation, and even tested their nerves. Check out the pictures below. (If you have more pictures to share, please email them to me at [email protected]) GES National Elementary Honor Society students collected food to donate to the area food bank. Over the course of a few weeks the donations poured in from our generous GES families. Our library was overflowing as students sorted and recorded the quantities and types of food collected. When complete they boxed it up for delivery.
Last week students created life size illustrations of the characters in their book clubs. Illustrations included artistic renderings of what the characters looked like as well as descriptions of traits they exhibited in the book. Students had a great time creating these "friends" and made some great connections with their books. |
